EDITOR's MESSAGE

Dear readers,

Once again, we hope to provide you with an interesting e-Journal, which I’m quite sure you will enjoy reading. A challenging article from Defrère et al from Professor Donnez’s group reports on the possible involvement of iron in the pathogenesis of peritoneal endometriosis. Iron overload, retrograde menstruations, lysis of erythrocytes and possible involvement of activated peritoneal macrophages, iron uptake and increased proliferation of endometrial cells are all supportive of a possible involvement in endometriosis

pathophysiology. The fact that an iron chelator, desferrioxamine, reduced the iron-induced cell proliferation in vivo is interesting, provoking and argumentative.

The papers published in the e-Journal are open for discussion and debate! Send us your comments, thoughts and any articles you may wish to reach
a great number of interested people via the WES’s special and practical channel. In the second article, Dr Bondza et al provide us with an interesting literature review of the role of endometrial dysfunctions in endometriosis pathogenesis. Aberrantly expressed hormonal, immuno-inflammatory, tissue remodelling, apoptotic and angiogenic factors may play a central role in endometriosis pathogenesis and related symptoms.

Every day we learn more about this enigmatic disease thanks to the efforts of a great number of researchers throughout the world. Our common challenge will be to translate these findings into sustainable improvements of endometriosis diagnosis and clinical outcomes. I thank the authors for their appreciated contribution and we are looking forward to receiving yours! You are kindly invited to react to these articles or to any other issue that may stimulate constructive exchange.

Do not miss the highlights from the PAX meeting in Leuven, Belgium, the update on WCE 2008 in Australia and all you may wish to know about the Aussie’s traditions, getting that air fare, and the current amusing and enlightening “10 sex facts in Australia”… Stay tuned!

Sincerely,
